This is just an idea because I don't know the HeroQuest you're using. If the ultimate aim of the quest involves an item, say you have to retrieve something or don something, and the Gargathi just simply steal the item then the HeroQuest can't be completed, at least until the item is back where it's supposed to be. This leads to two things, one the recovery of the item either via physical action/hunt or a court case perhaps (maybe both if the case breaks down) and two that the prospective initiate needs to be "safe" whilst all this is going on. If the penultimate stage of the quest involves taking hospitality with "friends" then she can just stay there. There's also the possibility of time dilation I guess, for her the last two stages went quickly but in the real world it took several days or weeks.
