Don't discount the nostalgia effect when naming places. People love naming their new homes after their old ones which explains London and Paris, Ontario and lots and lots and lots of other places. Functional names as mentioned earlier are big too. Main Street and Broadways exist in lots of places.

Back to Glorantha. North of Elkoi are two pathetic farming settlements named Greater and Lesser Bykotus (after the turncoat Balazaring who helped the Lunars take over Elkoi). The joke in my Glorantha is that the two places are identical and no one can remember why one's greater than the other.
