You can shelter the ground by heaping up earth above the roots (similar to white asparagus preparations, really), but quite as often you make a pile of harvested roots and protect them by layers of straw and earth.

Recently, I've been wondering about early spring growth which might happen under a frozen sky, and I decided to look for nutritious water plants. That applies to Heortling durulz only, but still... do you know any real world sweetwater plant or brackish water plant which could be grown under such conditions?

As to game relevance - if a food plant requires wet farming, then the entire culture will be in to dam building, irrigation etc. I seem to recall an odd mention of Orlanth introducing irrigation farming to his people during the early Storm Age. If so, what kind of harvest?
