An alternative (more expensive) basing idea is to buy the plastic "T" bases that Steve Jackson Games sells for their Cardboard Heroes. The leg of the T points up and is split lengthwise to take the figure. But as I said, more expensive than a penny per base :-).

Don't tempt me, I probably could :-). Hauling them all to a convention would be tres expensive, but if I could get everyone over to my house... I haven't counted them all, but I know I have over 500 painted (and lord knows how many unpainted) Gloranthan figures.
