Or one previous expedition that lost its horses in that way....or that at least reported it that way (more likely they managed to escape into the bush and the grazers were content to take the horses).

Hmmm, speaking of previous expeditions, having a previous explorer disapeared into the wilds is always good flavor. It could be a different expedition, swallowed by the wilds. Or it could be the same that lost their horses....a few servants returned to report the attack by the horse people, and how they were harried for days, seperated from their masters, and finally stumbled back to known lands. From finding locals drinking out of a noble's personal chamber pot, to finding one of them now serving as a tribal advisor, to finding them insanely guarding the entranc to the lost mine, to a "Doctor Livinstone, I presume?" moment, there is all sorts of fun to be had with lost explorers.
