And the stranded ducks of course looked for other mischief, and soon formed underground (underwater?) gangs of tough-bills, demanding protection money, etc (sure, laugh if you want, but do you want to be on the boat unloading a ship when the captain hasn't paid off the ducks?)

By the way, have you read Barbara Hambly's series of Benjamin January mysteries (Free Man of Color, etc), set in New Orleans in that period? They drag once in a while, but the setting is a blast. (she is probably better known for her fantasy novels, but these are straight historical mysteries).
