Why should particularly cold weather be cattle-killing? Kept in a barn it won't be difficult to keep them warm enough. I would think that cattle die when the fodder runs out because of a poor crop the previous year or the winter is longer than expected. If the cattle are usually hungry at the end of winter an extra few weeks without food will be lethal.
