Fimbulwinter Madness

Coming late to the winter thread, sorry about that. My tuppence when it comes to moderately interesting things about winter weather:

Frozen Bubbles - on a cold, still day you can blow bubbles that will flash freeze in mid-air. It needs to be bloody cold though (minus twenties celsius or thereabouts).

The Föhn - this is a very distinctive weather pattern you get on the northern side of the Alps. Basically you get a build up of warmer air on the Italian side of the Alps, which suddenly comes piling through the passes onto the German/Austrian side causing large and very rapid temperature increases. My g/f (who's Bavarian) tells of overnight transformations from -10 and thick snow on the ground, to +10 with rapid snowmelt, crystal clear air and all the beer gardens doing a roaring trade. People get rather bad tempered and choleric during a Föhn (although that can be hard to tell with Bavarians) but apparently lots of doctors and such are reluctant to embark upon delicate work with a Föhn on.

Regards
Luke
