I recommend two books by 'H.N.Turteltaub' (a thin disguise for Harry Turtledove, the prolific author of fantasy and alternate history):

Over the Wine-Dark Sea
The Gryphon's Skull

These describe the adventures of two cousins from Rhodes trading with a fast merchant ship in the eastern Mediterranean, set in the period when Alexander's Successors were warring between themselves. Turtledove has a PhD in mediaeval history and these books are very well researched. No actual magic, but the characters believe in the reality of magic and the gods and act accordingly.

Several encounters show the use of both oars and sail when meeting or avoiding an enemy.

These two books are out in PB from Tor - in the UK they may only be available in SF import shops such as Forbidden Planet. A third is out in hardback, which I haven't seen.
