Well, why don't you get them investigating how Kyger Litor got the man rune association, map the myth using rebel troll factions and then Heroquest to stop Kyger Litor aquiring the man rune. As narrator you could decide exactly what this implication would mean in your game.
Possibilities are;
Trolls stop being born
Trolls cease to exist as a race. Imagine that - Dagori Inkarth completely empty! The castle of lead collapses!
Or alternativley Cragspider herself heroquests to reverse what the players had done and the by product is that the trollkin curse is lifted thus the plan backfires spectacularly!
I think you should go with it as a story. One of the best scenarios I read was the alternative future scenario when the Dragon rise (TOTRM - Sartar) was stopped and the Hero's had to go on a Heroquest to try and rescue the plan!
