In grek myth, Lethe and the Mnemosyne are both tributaries of the Styx. The dead drink from the Lethe to forget the troubles of the world, but drinking from the Mnemosyne re-awakens lost memories. But still, the dead that drink from the Lethe do not cease to be themselves.

I have no idea if there are analogues in Gloranthan myth, but illumination is more than just a learned set of facts - it alters the nature of one's personal conciousness.
