My longsword teacher does neolithic age reenactment as his hobby. Apparently one get's a pretty decent axe from the jawbone of a moose. The axe is actually made of one half of the mooses lower jaw. The teeth are filed away, so that, at the top, only the hard outer layer (can't remember what the stuff is called) is left and sharpened.

Apparently the thing has a nice heft to it, and is viciously sharp. A good hand-axe, no metal needed.

And now enchant it, so it won't shatter so easily...
