Unless of course you enter at a "the barrier thins" place -- which IMO you often would, the entry points not being exactly magically arbitrary.

That I'd definitely agree with. There are probably 'family resemblances' at work though, that make "improvising" more feasible in some cases. (Or in others, like the 'newt roads, Bizarrely and Mind-bendingly Difficult.)
