Well, rivers, their size and their relative navigability are kind of an obssesion with me as a white water kayaker so I'll give it a shot...

Looking at the relative size, topography and rainfall of Sartar I imagine that the rivers tend to be an the whole like those of the NW US/SW Canada (not counting the Frazier or Columbia) or the Alps. That is, not too huge - in the range of 10 - 400 cumecs (the higher figure being at the high of spring run-off) but with most being in the 20-150 cumecs range (1 cumecs = 27 cfs for the Americans on the list). That is, fairly substantial, probably unfordable in sea season, but fairly easy to get across for most of the year. The season will make a huge difference in the relative size and navigability of the rivers although I imagine that the River (Engizi) would be fairly constant in level given that the main source is independant of the seasonal rainfall or snowmelt.

For those who know there areas I'm suggesting rivers like the Skykomish (in Washington), the Snake (Idaho), the Ubaye (French Alps) or the Inn (Swiss/Austria) as opposed to the Columbia, Rhine, Frazier, Zambezi, etc... (But bigger than the drainage ditches that pass for rivers in the uk! ;)

Actually, I always thought that Sartar would be a great place for kayaking with great creeks and waterfalls! (see http://www.steepcreeks.com/scphotogallery.htm for what I'm raving about.) Its just a pity about the hairy savages that live there...

ObGlorantha: I imagine the Salmon man's HQ (as mentioned in DP: LoT) as being a great, epic tale with him having to fight the daimons of the current to go upstream, jump up 10m waterfalls, avoid hungry bear spirits until he finaly reaches the headwaters, mates with the naiad of the source, before succumbing to exhaustion and dying... His body then gives rise to the new generation of Salmon that will come back in the next cycle!

Great plot potential there - there is this great HQ that will ensure your clan's survival by bringing the Salmon back to your local stream, unfortunately you'll have to die at the end of it...

Good rivers to you,
Yak
