Have you ever seen Nick Brooke wearing feathers? (Don't worry, it wasn't *just* feathers.) Greg skinned and his hide worn as a cloak? Did you know that 'Frankie Goes to Hollywood' is a central part of all great Darjiini rituals? Haven't you ever wondered what kind of Red Moon Goddess there would have been with a different set of Seven Mothers?
These are just some of the truths, horrors and revelations which emerged the first time the 'Birth of the Goddess' freeform ran, at Gloranhacon VIII. Now, the bigger, revised, full version of this epic is going to be running at Continuum (http://www.continuum.uk.net), and the sign-up is now open!
"It is 1119 and Peloria weeps. Brutal Carmanian overlords from the
west have enslaved her people and chained the great cities of Dara
Happa. Savage nomads to the east raid and plunder. The land is
stalked by spies and sell-swords, hunger and hate. But there are
whispers in the night. Whispers of hope. That a new goddess will be
born who will free her people and bring peace, plenty and purpose to
all Glorantha. Whispers of opportunity, of a new order in which even
the meanest farmer or soldier could become be raised to the heavens,
if in the right place, at the right time - and on the right side.
Whispers of danger for the Carmanians and those who serve them, who
would cut down this new dream before it can become flesh.
"Although a smaller version was played at Gloranthacon VIII in
Toronto (2003), this will be the premiere of the full-size version
of this new Gloranthan freeform. Written by Mark Galeotti, series
editor and co-author of the Imperial Lunar Handbooks, it is about
hope, redemption and creation, about adventure, politics and magic
on an epic scale, for 50 players, running for 5 hours. Set at the
time of the birth of the Goddess, a pivotal moment in Gloranthan
myth, characters may be seeking to bring it about, prevent it or
simply working to their own agendas against this historic backdrop.
This is a game of faith and magic. It involves imperial politics,
personal ambition, sacrifice and nobility, cruelty and revenge, but
first and foremost it is about personal and cultural growth and
change. Rituals and heroquests will unleash formidable magics.
Empires may fall or be raised. Old rifts will be healed, new hatreds
kindled. Characters will be die, but be reborn or return as souls
and spirits. Mortals may become heroes or even gods. Expect and
embrace such change! Here is a chance to become a pivotal figure in
the very birth of the Red Goddess and thus the Lunar Empire,
assuming roles from the most famous to the since-forgotten. Perhaps
the Goddess will be born thanks to a different set of Seven Mothers?
Or could her essences be consumed by Carmanian sorceries? Will the
Moon be Red, or Black? Let history be made!"
Details of the freeform and how to sign up are _at_ http://www.continuum.uk.net/pages/birth%20of%20the%20goddess.htm That said, there seem to be some problems with getting at the signup sheet itself, so in case anyone is having trouble, I'll put a copy also into the Files section of the group.
I hope to see familiar faces and new ones in the game! Even for those who played at Gloranthacon, there have been many changes and the return of numerous plotlines which had been removed because of the smaller number of players -- but anyway, such are the fertile imaginations of 50 players, that surprises for all of us are a certainty!
All the best
Mark
