Yes, they're trained to operate as units of magicians. I think they'll probably be a College of Magic keyword which will be similar to the Wizard keyword but with more emphasis on group magic. They aren't even really soldiers but university graduate students doing specialised work mere soldiers wouldn't understand. It's terrible that work requires them to go on campaign.
