I imagine they control it until lack of water would compel them to move on.

The Sun Domers control a salt mine out in the parched wastes of Vultures Country called Pent Ridge; above the cliff, salt licks have formed where what little groundwater there is has risen to the surface and evaporated, leaving the salt behind. Nomad bands have perennially squabbled over control of the salt lick but the Sun Domers have only reasserted their ancient rights to the site in recent times. Count Solanthos has an agreement with the Sable Riders, who have free use of the salt lick, in return for providing security against hostile nomads (they also get the occasional sport of hunting down escapees). Reasonably friendly nomads can use the salt lick if they make a deal with the Sables, but others have to wait until the current band gets bored and leave and before the Sable Queens send more young warriors out to keep hold of their prize.
