FWIW, a lot of my wargaming friends use coins to base their figures. I gather there's some law, never enforced but still present, that you mustn't obscure the Queen's head when doing this. It counts as "defacing coin of the realm", and is a minor subclass of Treason. (No, I haven't checked, so this may be outdated or exaggerated.)
