All,

This email is not to speculate on the impending publication policy from Issaries, but I did want to share some of my thoughts on the environment of creativity in which we Gloranthans contribute to the heroquest game and the world of Glorantha.

The situation that we have is undoubtably unique. Almost all other game companies have very specific policies on what they allow to be published for their game systems and game worlds. Look at the Call of Cthulhu game by Chaosium. All of the supplements for it are produced either by Chaosium directly, or one of its licensees, like Pagan Publishing, Triad, Fantasy Flight, etc. The game is also supported by a number of independent and high quality magazines like "The Whisperer" and "The Black Seal".

I see little reason why something similar can't work for Glorantha. This will mean more structure and official agreements with Issaries, but if managed correctly this shouldn't pose any problems or create onerous burdens for us. It will only mean changing the way we produce things.

Issaries relies greatly on its freelance authors, artists, and volunteers to make the game a go and we all want the game to succeed. In the end, it all comes down to the environment people work in collectively, and the spirit we adopt for making this all a success. Finding a framework for us to work togther will require all of us to change the way we do things. That will include a shift away from "whatever and however", but that doesn't spell an end to our creative contributions.

All companies, Issaries included, have to control their intellectual property to sustain their business. Most importantly, why should Issaries do differently when the alternative is a business model for Heroquest and Glorantha that may not be able to sustain itself.
