Yep, fantastic scenario. And its somewhat open ended approach to how the heroes eventually deal with what they discover is part of its charm.
When I ran it it was definitely a character defining moment for some of the PCs, one acquiring a reputation as a hard core zealot for his willingness to slaughter children (and starkly distinguishing himself from his companions who could find no good argument for not doing so, but had not the stomach to do it themselves).
