Also with cloth. Layer(s) of linen or similar, glued on to the wood. Paint over the surface to make to look good (until first combat, of course!)
Edges at least bound with rawhide to lessen the effect of nasty sharp things chopping into them. Binding with metal would no doubt have the same effect but more so: but a shield is a cheap, replaceable item. Any fool can do the rawhide work (well, I did my own, and if *I* can...), metal would need more expertise and equipment.
