Apparently the dark age britons tended to choose fords and bridges for their battle grounds (the small group of highly armed and armored professionals could take the brunt of the fighting blocking it, with the less useful bulk of the army backing them up and preventing people from swimming across. Given their similar numbers and troop types, I can well imagine the Heortlings following similar tactics and plans of battle.

This could explain what happened to the sartarite/farpoint forces too. They put most of their leaders and their storms at the place of honor, the ford, while the lunars found some way to get a strong force across on a flank, facing only the fyrd. Unsupported by the usual heroes and weaponthanes, the fyrd would quickly route, leaving the core of the army flanked and in deep trouble. Possibly the young prince had been put in charge of one wing, as good training (and to keep him safe), which could be why he broke free. Or once they realized what was happening, a small group may have immediately hussled him out of there before the lunar enveloping movement was complete.
