It worked for Clanranald's regiment at Falkirk in 1745 against British Dragoons. I suspect it was not a common tactic because it relies on unformed infantry being prepared to take on cavalry in close combat. After all in most cavalry/infantry engagements one side or the other breaks off before contact.
