Stephen King was selling his books as shareware. Having been a shareware author (miniWRITER, DiskInfo) in the past, my guess is Mr. King didn't understand shareware very well.

As for porn, those guys typically have to pay the highest rates to the credit card companies -- there are lots of problems actually billing the customers.

Selling a non-tangible product (like a downloadable file) is frequently the second most expensive credit card fee.

And selling anything over the Net is more expensive than selling it in a store.

I haven't heard; I suspect it's hard to measure. If I recall correctly, he wasn't making final versions available that way.
