This is an appropriate forum for basic discussions of playing Heroquest. Deep Gloranthan discussions should go to the Digest, as Peter Metcalfe pointed out.

Here is my take on it: To me it seems maximum game fun that different groups of dwarves don't always agree. It creates opennings for interesting stories. Therefore it should be true.

It is easy to justify too: while all dwarves started maintaining the world machine, they weren't the original builders. So at best each dwarf, and even each group of dwarves, had an incomplete view of the whole--think of the story of the blind men and the elephant! Between all dwarves all was known. But not only was the world machine damaged, many dwarves were damaged, and knowledge was also lost, and much contact between dwarves was also lost.

Therefore each group is working from imperfect knowledge, even if they don't realize it yet. This will affect how they prioritize certain tasks, which in turn affects schedule and methodology.

One interesting story for the hero wards would be two colonies of dwarves both identifying a needed component, at about the same time. They both figure out where it is, and both go to get it. Then find that one group's strudelheimer is another group's multifowser. With the right "heroquest" maybe they'll realize that it is one and the same, and how their two works are actually one, and how they can combine--a big step forward for the world machine! Of course a major component finally coming together and getting into service is apt to have.....repercussions.
