In Jo Clayton's swan-song 'Drums' trilogy, there are a small number of wizards who are contesting for ultimate power. The first one we meet has blue tattoos all over his body marking and enhancing the internal flows of magic within his body. His two principal rivals both have to conceal their powers within their societies so can't have permanent markings.
One paints himself with blue runes before each magical working, the other saves time by having a cunningly made suit of wires which she just has to put on to create her channels.
