HeroQuests in fiction

I've just read 'The Fairy Godmother' by Mercedes Lackey. The eponymous heroine spends most of the book in her world's equivalent of heroquesting - one of the main plot strands is about whether she dares try an experimental heroquest to remove a limit on how a Godmother can live. It's fantasy with romance elements.

Lackey's work isn't to everyone's taste but I'd say this is one of her better books.
