Two things--
-First I agree with you that neither of those cults is about homosexualit, but I think homosexuals who are part of those cults have a more easily defined social role if they want to go after it that way.

Second, I think the write up of Nandan in Storm Tribe made it clear that the cult is not primarily about bearing children. I think "birthing man" has to be read more like "man who is a midwife, amongst other traditional female roles."
