I tend to use the term for "A heroquest that has been written down for anyone to use (in our real world play)".

There is no "Gloranthan Vanilla Heroquest" - every culture, cult, tribe, family, will have individual insights into secrets of any quest that they have performed. "We have always met the Scarlet Canary at this place". "Well *we* have always met the Pink Titmouse, so you must be wrong".

So the quest described in "Fish Rain" is "vanilla" in that all the players of HQ have the same version. But if I tweak it here and there, it's no longer Vanilla, it's "Roderick-Flavored" (ewwww!)
