I think the Heortling LM priests read signs - the way birds fly, the colour of clouds etc. and interpret those in the light of what they know from the past.
Kev by comparison sees images of the future.
Other LM priests from a more written culture will pore over cryptic documents and try and relate them to current events. Usually succeeding about five years after the information might have been useful. There's probably a subcult which specialises in this.
The there are the Busarian astrologers who calculate the future on the basis of the movement of celestial bodies. That's the reason why Tatius decides where to build the Temple of the Reaching Moon and when to dedicate it. Some astrologer made a mistake there I guess.
