The elderly boyar, Prince Dimitri, has been persuaded to make a pilgrimage to the village of Zubovo and worship the ikon there, reported to contain a fragment of the True Cross. But the journey is dangerous: the land is under the dominion of the Mongol Golden Horde, and the roving Teutonic Knights will kill anyone they consider 'heathen'. What will Dimitri and his sons find in Zubovo, and will they survive it?
