Exactly. The *society* is illiterate. If you want "everyone" to know something, written instructions will not help. Unlike the society we live in, where literacy is assumed of every adult. We have (at least, I hope) 85% literacy: they have (at least) 85% illiteracy.
And therefore, the spelling of Broyan/Brian/Brion's name is completely irrelevant and meaningless to Orlanthi society, almost certainly including him.
