Hi Rob

YGWV and this is just a few thoughts -
the initiation is set up to teach the child about life and death. It should be a life changing exprerience. Now, the kid will have been preparing and looking forward to it for a couple of years. He will have been waiting for news of when he would be 'initiated' with the local kids the same/similar age.

Like all heroquest games, you should 'adjust' the resistances to match the needs of the story, I don't think its any worse for that. Having said that, the deeper levels have their own risks. These test the heart and very being of the child. THey would have fear resistances to overcome to proceed. These are the dangerous parts. If a child does not turn aside at this point then there is a real risk the child may not come back, but the rewards will almost certainly lead to greatness in later life, such as clan champion, tribal king or, perhaps, warlord of the sartari!

For excellent material for initiation you could refer to the Boudicca books by Manda Scott, and the characters initiation that is called 'sitting the long nights'.

Regards
Rob

If you want some good material for initiation then you could do worse
