As usual, much stuff from Mike Holmes that I agree with, just two snippets I want to comment on.

FWIW, this is exactly what I've just done with the Swords game. Yes, the characters are powerful (we now have the numbers matching the dramatic descriptions!), but the way they're developing is to acquire interesting flaws and enemies.

Has anyone else tried this? Replaced the entire development system and HP spend by "what do you want, the answer's yes"?

Potentially, yes - why not? You can win a contest, yet come away from it "injured". And the rules allow this, at least if you're doing Extended.
