They are also useful for getting through winter. Goose was the traditional Xmas poultry before Turkey usurped the position and of course goose down is very warm; plus goose-grease (which you get plenty of if you've ever roasted one for Xmas) was the stuff to slather on your chest before sowing yourself into your underwear until spring. I imagine Orlanthi might well value these properties when Storm/Darkness seasons are in the offing.  

Goose fat is marvelous stuff in fact and not just 'cuz its scrummy when used to roast potatoes. My parents' house (dating from the early C18th) still has its original staircase, the bannister to which had to be dismantled a few years back for some maintenance work - the screws (which were originals, you could see the threads were hand-cut) came out clean as a whistle and completely untarnished, having been dipped in goose fat by the joiner who built the thing back when Queen Anne was on the throne...
