I've been happy with the Penguin editions, or anything else published since I've been alive... Here's the Penguin version of Njal's Saga:
"Thorgrim dropped his shield, lost his footing, and toppled down from the roof. He strode over to where Gizur and the others were sitting.
"Gizur looked up at him and asked, 'Is Gunnar at home?'
"'That's for you to find out,' replied Thorgrim. 'But I know that his halberd certainly is.'
"And with that he fell dead."
I think Egil's Saga, Njal's Saga, and Laxdaela Saga are generally considered the best, in terms of literary merit. If you really don't want a multi-generational family story, stick to the first two (although the conventions of the genre still make sure you know about people's ancestry).
Speaking of ancestry, characters from Laxdaela Saga appear in Egil's Saga. These almost certainly were real people. We just get to see them from different viewpoints.
