It's going to be very variable, depending on the size of the clan and the productiveness of the land. I'd look at it this way:

  1. Work out where the most convenient place is for the clan centre.
  2. Draw routes from there along roads and paths to likely steads bearing in mind that they need to be able to get to the clan market within a day maximum (preferably half that) and a wagon or pack mule isn't going to do better than 10 to 20 miles a day at best. In the terrain the exiles live, probably half that.
  3. Consider where other clans are likely to be and adjust accordingly.
  4. Draw a line about a mile or two outside the steads you've identified and you've got the clan tula.

You'll probably find you've got a funny shaped piece of land up to ten miles long and varying between a mile and five miles wide depending on the terrain.

Populate the steads according to the suitablity of the land. A stead on flat land by the river is going to have many more people than one half way up a mountain.
