  Well, _now_ they don't of course, because everyone knows better, and there are nice rituals to take care of all sorts of things, the humakti keep the line between life and death as sharp as a sword edge, and all that.

But back in the old days, let me tell you! When death was new some live people found ways to follow the dead, before the guardians of the underworld knew how to stop them. Then again, some people had seen death, but hadn't stolen it yet, and tried to find it on their own, sending themselves or others to the underworld still living. Aside from those purposeful things, the ways were not so well watched, and some people just arrived there, without even realizing where they had gone. And that is without even touching on some of the tragedies and disasters, like the ship Too Far, or the battle of dying earth, or the Army of Death to Death. The Grey Folk don't get many new members these days, aside from some unfortunate hero questers, but back before time began their numbers began to threaten the very court of the dead--why else do you think the Giant Stork guardians were put in place?
