I just read it last night in the rules: probably slightly misquoted.

..as soon as you try to take something from the gods plane (spirit and essence implied?) you get kicked out into the hero plane where there is a replica that you can take.

Also given is an alternative that the hero takes an item ready to receive the appropriate powers. ie Harrek probably had an ordinary bear skin with him. this turns white and has the properties of the one he "took" from the white bear spirit.
