I think you're right. Its like real life battles in ancient times.
Each army has its advanatages and disadvantages. Each tries to
counter its opponent's advantages and minimise its disdvanatages by
fighting in the correct time and place. Magic is just another area
to be dealt with in tactics and strategy. Gloranthn armies do
have 'airmobile' troops, long range 'artillery' and so on and their
opponents have to deal with them. Battles are lost when one general
fails to take into account the special abilities of the other
side.
