Grandmother is also the title used for one of the most feared characters in Russian myth. To quote Wikipedia

"Baba Yaga in Slavic mythology is the wild woman, the dark lady and mistress of magic. She is also seen as a forest spirit, leading hosts of spirits. The word baba in most Slavic languages means an older or married woman of lower social class or simply grandmother."

If you meet an old woman in the forest who might not be what she seems, 'baba' is a respectful and prudent way to address her.
