Probably has to do with how you choose to receive e-mails, and how lame your e-mail client is.

The Mac OS X version of Eudora handled your last link just fine from a Digest, correctly ignoring the period at the end.

The typical way to beat bad mail clients over the head is to enclose a URL in angle brackets (which also takes care of line breaking), as in <http://www.pensee.com/dunham/glorantha.html>
