Mike´s post makes, as, ever, a lot of sense. This discussion has come up before, I think on the Forge, in that instance starting off with lightsabres. One suggestion, which Mike reiterates, was to use the thing as an ability.

The advantage in this instance of using the metal armour as an ability is that it could augment in some situations or in others (e.g. "I´m going to intimidate him using my metal armour ability") be the active ability. That in itself may pose problems for the defender, who may get a modifier for using a less than appropriate ability.
