Drunk elves

During a recent bizarre train of thought Jane and I came up with the following logic / ideas.

In humans anaerobic, physical exercise produces lactic acid as a by product.

In plants the same process produces ethanol (alcohol) :-)

Normally that isn't an issue but what happens in the case of Gloranthan Elves?

solutions:
1) They produce ethanol and then get drunk - that's why you never see elves running.

2) They are react to ethanol in the same way we react to lactic acid - it causes cramp. This may explain why trolls like eating elves, especially after a long hard chase?

3) They react to lactic acid the way we react to ethanol. Hence the habit of leaving out saucers of milk for the little folk. Sour milk / yogurt contains lactic acid.

Just some fun.
