Exactly. If a 12 year old could reasobaly do it, no need for dice, or just roll against 17 if it might be important. :)

These are sort of Active Talents in HQ terms yes. They have effectively specialised in Common Magic. They will learn spells at school, based on the HP ones and ones they invent, which will be Active again -- but I think I will freeze them at 14, and not allow Hero Point expenditure to improve them.
Wands however will be augment only, as will cauldrons etc, and books - but give augments ot a range of spells - so a phoenix feather wand might be expected to help with rebirth and fire type spells? I will run them as abilities rather than the static equipment bonus - your wand might not get better, but you might learn how to use it better?

Yes, and some secrets, like the right way to get past Peeves the poltergeist (except they are at Greyfriars not hogwarts) and a load of reltionships with prefects and Housemaster etc

I explained them, but a sthe characters were usually apart in their respective homes I kept to simple contests to keep up the pace. The one Extended contest we were about to do never happened as the player did something very clever and so it never cam eoff, but I did explain the rules to them.

It was very stripped down HQ, but I think with new players that can work rather well!
