Trying not to make this a spoiler for The Deathly Hallows but it turns out wands are rather important. I would say that a wand is necessary for casting spells but it would depend on its attunement to its owner and type as to how effective it would be, ranging from a large negative modifier to a large positive one if its 'the elder wand'.
