Yes, that was the problem ('twas too late at night for me to feel like elaborating in my earlier post). Seems I can either spend £200 upgrading to Word 2007 - which I'd rather not just at the moment - or make another attempt to install that compatibility patch. Trying to figure out how to do *that* was what took up so much time last night... I imagine Microsoft are deliberately making it difficult for me because I don't use IE.
