Just think in terms of every clan boundary not letting you through until the chieftain says yes (which will need a gift, placating, greeting rituals), unless they know you very well, or have other reasons to wave you on (let me through or the next thing through will be tax collectors).
And the false alarms - "You see movement in the trees, from more than one location"
And wayside shrines you need to pay your observances at
And random magical stuff (take a drink from this well before taking that path, else you die, or so they say)
And meeting people on the trail (I doubt you just ignore anyone and walk past, unless they are poor peasants with no more than a staff)
