I stand corrected. I've never used them much myself, but clearly they're at the root of Mike Hagen's work on the Danfive Xaron cult (cf. "Tales of the Reaching Moon" issue #16 for more). Along with the Soviet GULAG, Clive Barker's cenobites, Gestapo nacht und nebel, those security forces from "Brazil", "An Officer and a Gentleman", Trappist monasteries, Shaolin monasteries, etc. etc.
