Hi John,

I've written up some regiments for the forthcoming Chaos Society Pavis publication, which have been given a Greggish seal of approval and will also be going, in modified form, on the website.

A key point to make is that I don't think there will be *a* single rank structure except at the Army-level (let's call them generals). At the 'regimental' level, different rank structures apply to conform with different models of organisation, different cultures, different types of unit, etc.

What follows is IMO, but I use broadly Spartan-style structures for the traditional DH units, especially the phalanxes: a regiment is commanded by a Polemarch, whose senior NCO is a Lochagos. A 'company' - syntagma - is headed by a syntagmatarch which, in turn, breaks into ten 10-man files, each under an enomotarch. Regimental officers such as your quartermasters would probably be junior syntagmatarchs, enomotarchs or else pentekonters, in between. Your guy could also be a taxiarch (effectively junior lochagos) if he's an NCO. Units raised in the Modern Lunar period, on the other hand, have a more flexible structure and draw no distinctions between officers and noncoms. For convenience and taste, I use roughly Roman analogues. A regiment is commanded by a Tribune, each company by a centurion, each 14-(wo)man maniple by a sergeant or optio. A staff officers beneath the Tribune would be a centurion (often differentiated by specialism, such as pathfinder-centurion or commissary-centurion), optio prior or optio. A soldier wholly devoted to logistic duties would be one of the curatores.

Of course, there are umpteen other variations. Tarshite regiments are commanded by a Shieldthane, divided into Hundreds, each commanded by an axethane. A quartermaster would probably have some title like waggonthane or chestthane. The Red Dragoons are luner but divided into troops, not centuries. Then the chain of command would be tribune -> duplicarius (in charge of 3 troops) -> sesquiplicarius (troop-commander). Their regimental QM would be a sesquiplicariuscurator,  a troop QM a mere eques-curator.

In Aldachur itself, I've in the past had three main units atached to the Imperial Military Commissariat (the euphemistic name of the local command): a syntagma of the Granite Phalanx, a Hundred of Tarshite Auxilaries and the 13th Troop of the Red Dragoons. The phalanx are largely static guards, the Tarshites quite often trundle up and down the Tarsh Road, while the Red Dragoons generally find themselves in the cavalry patrol role, so again would be common sights on the road. The GP and RD are on the Imperial Army site, while the Tarshites are spear & shield or axe & shield armed medium infantry, looking quite Orlanthi but for their greater regularity of equipment and drill.

Hope this is of use!

Mark
